Bred by the nomadic Sami people of Lapland which encompasses the northern parts of Sweden, Finland, Norway and the Kola Peninsula of Russia, the Lappish dogs (ancestors of the Finnish Lapphund) have been used as hunting dogs, watch dogs and reindeer herders for centuries. The most important task of the Lappish dogs was to help guard and transport large reindeer herds to different pasturelands, according to the season. The herding and guarding tasks were varied, and the dogs had to be brave, cooperative, and independent.
